Why Do I Sometimes Clean Your Floors For Free?

Clementine mopping the Gallery at The Fuse Arts Center

I've got a big hang up on support systems.  If you've met me, you've probably heard me rant about how no one can truly do "it" alone (whatever it is - life, a project, existing).  Ps.  That's not a challenge for you rebellious types out there!  Really look at what's around you and what makes you happy.  Even if your solitude is appealing, there will always be times when a good friend is necessary.

Because of this perspective, it has caused me to do this activity that I call "community building".  In actuality, its just the process of making and keeping friends.  In this age of technology, it is funny to me that we are becoming more distanced when the tools to stay connected are so readily available.  If it weren't for Facebook, I wouldn't have half my friends and my community would weaken.

I guess I should go ahead and define what I mean when I say community...
In this context, it is a set of individuals that inhabit a similar time, space, consciousness, that unite for shared goals or experiences.  It can be friends, a neighborhood, co-workers, or people out there that share your interests that you've yet to meet!

I recently had the experience of feeling drawn to take a class hosted by C4 Atlanta called Artists in the Marketplace.  It's a great 3 week intensive class that gets your brain working on all sorts of issues you never realized you had as a feeling, thinking, producing, creative business human.  After chatting with the directors, I learned that they needed some cleaning and because I have a strong background in that business and the methods, I offered to help out.  I really love being able to offer my community a strong skill that I have honed for many years - even if its just cleaning a toilet well.  Makes me think of this quote from Martin Luther King Jr.
“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”
I think its really important to take advantage of those times when you feel an overwhelming ability to help someone.  It is the mode that creates the most genuine expression of that activity.   The ripples will peal out over the surface and the deed will affect the most distant shores.

Ps.  You guys should check out C4 Atlanta!  They are changing the landscape of arts in Atlanta by creating a stronger financially independent community of artists who will blow your mind and enhance your experience of life, as artists are often ethereally charged to do.

The silver lining to this story is that I have extended my community and resources by making new friends.  These days, there are very few times when I feel "without" because of the generosity and aid of my community.  Even when I am just feeling down on myself, these people come out of the wood work to let me know that they are listening, caring, able, and willing to help.  I couldn't be happier to take a sponge to their sinks or chat over green cleaning products...even though that business is a phase of life that I have left behind me.

Errand Tiger in Full Swing for Valentine's Day!

Hello Friends!

For a while I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this blog but I have finally settled on making it the home of all my business and cleaning lady info and experiences, even though I am cleaning less these days.

One cool thing that is in the future business wise is making deliveries for Valentine's Day!  Not only that I'm trying out my new Ukulele telegrams.  It may sound odd, but I can't wait to sing little love notes and favorite songs to unsuspecting beloveds across the city!  Here is the flyer and info to look out for if you are interested in having something delivered or sung.  Olive47 put this together for me along with the logo!  If you like what you see send her an email by clicking on her name above!

Sometimes I do Art

I bet you guys thought I was made of nothing but cleaning facts and lame jokes.  Well although that is fairly true, there is another part of me that is rarely allowed to express itself - my classically trained artistic side.  Yes, folks, I have a bachelor's in Art.  I know, you could never tell from my crappy drawings.  You might also be put off by my use of color and composition in the pieces below!  Everyone's a critic...I can deal.  The important thing to remember is that I'm putting it out on the line, exposing myself, strutting my raw work on your computer screens, hopefully, for your pleasure!  If it has the opposite effect, make some art about how much it offended you and strut that on MY computer screen!  (eyebrow raised in daring manner)

New Year, Same Lady, Better Everything

Hi-dee-HO readers!  Yes indeed its a New Year.  What are your resolutions?  What have you already put into motion?

I've done such a horrible job of keeping up with this blog.  If I had a new year's resolution, I think it would be to make this blog an amazing resource for folks.  I am certainly capable of doing so.  I've let a lot of things get in the way of it, including telling myself that there are so many websites "why would mine be so great or special?".  This, of course, is what many people have said in reference to many things in their lives, always with the same results of thwarted, half-hearted effort towards something that might otherwise be amazing!

How does one really apply oneself though?  How do you cut through all the crap and get down to making your thoughts and dreams a reality?!  I can't tell you how excited I am to get up to my little work room and throw some awesome information out, but something happens as soon as I step through the threshold of the doorway...stagnation, procrastination, anxiety, writer's block, and judgement!  Suddenly I can't write a thing and I start doing "not fun" stuff like taxes, just to distract myself from my worry and fear.  Why does it have to be so hard to get creative stuff...OUT!

This year is different though.  Everything is better; the air, the songs, the sun, the dirt, my clothes, your face, this blog, and that dog down the street that barks every time you pass the fenced yard.

Why is it different, you might ask?  It is different because this year we are all breaking out.  Breaking out of old habits, fearful mindsets, stigmas, closets, boredom, broken systems, and disconnectedness.  Maybe you feel like this isn't happening to you, but look closer at the subtly changing environment around you!  Take note because many people surrounding you are moving in bold directions, are losing things and gaining others, are changing their minds!  Are you SURE you're not one of them?

All these changes are not so bad, eh, though change is never easy.  Good thing for us all that there are a group of people bracing to support you!  This group is huge and it is loving!  This group includes people who are acting in government, who are acting on farms, who are learning alternative medicines, who are gathering information to share, who are focusing on freedoms and freeing resources to be utilized for the improvement of our lives and our world!  Sounds like some "hippy" crap, right?  I don't think it's just the hippies this time...There are a lot of "normal" people in this group too!

I mention this here, in this post about the newness of the year, because you might find your self somewhere NEW very soon and you might be feeling a little uneasy.  I want you to rest easy though. The infinite universe, which includes your tiny world, is abundant and prosperous!...meaning you won't go long without if you believe that its out there.  This relates back to my own challenges of course.  I am saying this as much for you as for myself.  AND I am part of that magical group that I talked about.  I'm here for you, dear ways that I have yet to be.

As Rocco says in Boondock Saints "I'll catch you on the flip side."

New for Clementine's Clean and Shine in 2012

Hi everybody!  This very special email is a summary of some changes that are going on starting August 1st, 2012.  I'm very excited to be celebrating my 6th year of cleaning and feel like I am getting better at my job all the time!  The last 6 years have seen some drastic highs and lows but those that have stuck with me, are like family to me, and I can't imagine leaving them although some day I will have to in order to realize my true dreams of becoming an illustrator and comic artist!  In the meantime, here we are together making our lives work out one day at a time!

First thing to note:  As of August 1, 2012, all rates will be increasing by $10 dollars a visit.
I realize this may put some of you over budget for cleaning.  It is not my intention to run you off so if this will be a problem, perhaps we can tweak your current cleaning regimen to account for the increase.  The rate change is necessary because when I started I knew nothing and charged according to my abilities and knowledge.  Now I am 6 years of research and experience richer and it is about time that my rates reflected this increase as well (roughly 10% increase for each year).  Again, let me know if this will be a problem and we will figure out a best solution for you.  (Some exceptions apply.)

Second thing to note:  Text reminders will be a paid courtesy at the rate of $5 per month.
I am going to be employing a new program that will be sending an email with cleaning dates to your address.  It is up to you to put these dates in your calendar and to also amend your calendars when there are changes.  You can always text to confirm that I am coming on a particular day or at a particular time but I will no longer be sending out reminders via text unless paid to do so.  If this is a problem, let me know and perhaps we can work something out for you...not everyone logs their information in the same way so I'm sure there's other solutions available.

Third thing to note:  New client manual with revised cancellation and scheduling info.
I am putting together a new client manual.  For those of you who received my last one 3 years ago, I think you will agree that its time for an update.  Many things have changed, including my ability to take on more clients (as I'm nearly with a filled schedule) and my ability to change schedules on a dime (although I always strive to keep this possible on some level - as it is unavoidable during certain times of year).  Among the changes are a last minute cancellation fee of $15 for less than 24 hours notice and without a reschedule.  The best way to avoid this fee is to let me know in advance so that I may reschedule you as soon as possible.  This is also in place to deter the "we forgot you were coming" disease that strikes all busy people at some point.  Hopefully updating your calendars and knowing your regular schedule will also help.

When you receive your new manual, please look over it closely.  I am trying out a new format in order to explain some of the more stressing scheduling conflicts which can be confusing.  Also, I want everyone to know what products I am using (included in the back), payment options, first cleaning basics, and have a checklist for their clean which will ultimately insure the most complete service possible.

After all the dust settles, I'll be stirring it up once more to open my new wing of business in september, loosely associated with cleaning, which is errand running.  The new department is called Errand Tiger!  The website is still under construction but you can visit it now to see what errands may be purchased a la carte to help ease your schedule or free up your day!  Any of these services can be added to your regular cleaning regimen by scheduling and paying for them via the website.  I am attempting to be as paperless as possible for everyone's sake - I don't know about yours but frankly my office can't take it anymore!  The reformed slob in me still struggles with paper stacks!

I hope you will bare with me through these exciting changes, as it will create a more dependable, thorough result with many more service opportunities available to you for your convenience!

Thank you for your support!  I am grateful for your impact in my life!

Our focus for this entry is brought to you by today's word : SYNERGY

I'm typing again with the intention of bringing great ideas into public awareness.  All the things that I am learning and want to learn are leaping from my heart and trembling at the tip of my tongue!  As I was mopping the other day, I began to think about how people, clients, and friends might want to know what I am learning.  They might prosper from knowing how things fit together and why I am doing things the way that i do them.  The need for better presentation became brilliantly apparent - the light's on in the attic!

So along this path that I was set upon over five years ago, I am constantly resizing, redistributing priority, reconstructing systems within my business and knowledge of the world.  The responsibility I feel to better communicate the intricate details comes with a feeling of maturity in my career and being.  I don't think I would have been able to do this from the beginning.  There were many feelings of inferiority and uncertainty to conquer before I could express myself as a cleaning lady!

Over at my friend Lindsey's house, I've been writing and working on things.  One of our mutual projects is learning about sustainable living!  While discussing the details of goat farms, rabbit poop fertilizer, and organizing the yard, I suddenly realized the importance of working together and sharing knowledge.  Believe it or not, it was the first time that I thought, "man I should share this info on my blog!"  To think that all a cleaning lady is or does is cleaning is a shallow picture indeed!  I would much rather bring you the vibrant and vital truth....which is unique to my position in life, hopefully interesting enough to share, entertaining to a point, and ultimately educational as an example.

Before I could get these little thoughts typed into this screen, Lindsey tossed out a wonderful word!  Synergy!!  She expressed her love of working with me and others in a synergistic way.  Her use of the word in context was superb and my curiosity soon had me gazing starry-eyed at's definition.  I also like Marriam Webster and its sometimes useful to reference the Urban Dictionary as well!  Anyway, my challenge to you dear readers is to create, harness, or reignite the force of synergy in your lives! I truly believe that working together will not only allow us to understand more, but will also allow us to prosper more thoroughly!  When I asked Lindsey how she knew that word she said she read it on a kombucha bottle.  I guess advertising ain't all bad!  ;^)

What's in the Cleaning Lady's Bucket?: BLEACH (and why I don't like using it!)

Bleach is commonly used in household cleaning.  It is so much a staple cleaner that I often have trouble steering people away from it.  Besides the obvious environmentally destructive qualities which help it to whiten and kill germs, it has also destructive health qualities.  It is particularly dangerous, even fatal, when mixed with other acids such as ammonia!

This article by PERMA suggests that while bleach is effective in cleaning and disinfecting (under the right conditions), there may actually be better options for businesses and households depending on their individual needs.

It is also in my best interest to clean with natural products vs. bleach because of the repeated exposure that my job requires.  It is my practice to only use bleach when absolutely necessary.   So if you love your cleaning lady, go green and save her some future health care trauma! (Thank You!)

New Comic

A new character has started to emerge in my comics called "the mess".  He is an amoeba shaped dude who is fun loving and balances the order of cleaning lady's life with a good bit of messiness.

The BIZZ: Makeshift office

Holy cow my boyfriend's house is so cold!  Soon I will be moving into a tiny carriage house in the back of one of my landlord's many rental properties.  The little hovel is behind the house of my mother's child hood friend Lucy Lowe.  I intend on calling it "The Rabbit Hole" and within its walls I hope to create the important structures to both my cleaning business and my musical/philosophical/artistic career.

Until I move, I am forced to set up a temporary office but I'm finding it difficult as the whole house is an ice box!  On this fair monday morning, here I sit on the floor, as good as anywhere, with a blasting hot heater burning my outer sweater made shell.  It's amazing outside - cold, sunny, windy, with tiny sparkling flakes powdered throughout the wind gusts, looking as if someone peppered atlanta with glitter!  Never have I seen it so wintery in December!

Monday's are great for office work.  Somehow I have collected all that I need at the foot of this chair and table that most people would be utilizing to their organizational advantage.  Yerba Mate and vegetable soup are working to keep my energy powered up.  Every once in a while, one of the animals will come steal a little of the warmed floor real estate which I am currently perched upon.  I am so grateful that this is working at the moment.  Cheers to making do with makeshift situations!

The Book B.U.G.

If you have ever thought of entering into the cleaning service industry, then this is an excellent book to help you on your way!  I have read it nearly front to back and I am using it to create growth and stability in my own business.

*Some of it's greatest qualities include:

Small chapters
Excellent break down of info
Very thorough regarding topics
Gives a good idea of challenges

*My one concern is that perhaps it is too vague in certain instances.  I have been in the business for 4 years, so when I read about the challenges involved, I know exactly to what they are referring.  However, I feel that someone who has no previous experience with the industry or of ever having employed a cleaner, they might have a tough time understanding why some of things are necessary or which ones, for instance, are not necessary.  This is a pretty light criticism....really overall I feel the book is a mighty good resource!
